Card-Carrying Villain: Averted at first, for nearly a millenia the Skeksis maintained an affable and benevolent facade to the Gelflings and the rest of Thra, posing as generous and just beings to justify their rule. The Caligula: Initially much more affable in the past, they eventually descend into selfish and genocidal behavior as time passed.Brian Froud describes them as being "part reptile, part predatory bird, part dragon". Bird People: Essentially rotting toothed humanoid vultures. In Age of Resistance, the true Big Bad is skekSo the Emperor. In the original movie, the true one would be skekUng via Authority Equals Ass Kicking and skekSil being The Heavy. Believing Their Own Lies: The Skeksis are so terrified of death and the concept of what might happen after death that they try to convince themselves that they are immortal.Jen's mission in the movie is to undo their victory before it's too late. The Bad Guys Win: While they weren't considered to be evil at the beginning, they did succeed at getting the Crystal and at making themselves the rulers of Thra for a thousand years, and while the circumstances aren't known they did succeed at crushing the resistance against them with their Garthim soldiers, nearly-exterminating the Gelflings in the process.Aristocrats Are Evil: Unlike their Mystic counterparts, they're cruel and live lavishly, dominating everyone through their self-imposed royalty. The only known Skeksis who has killed another Skeksis is skekSil ( skekVar REALLY shouldn't have taken his spot as the Emperors right-hand man). This has less to do with morality and more to do with how their own fear of death and the implications of what the death of one supposedly immortal Skeksis means for the rest of them. Ape Shall Never Kill Ape: The Skeksis delight in the suffering and humiliation of their comrades, usually willing to turn on each other at a moments notice, but they always stop short of actually killing one another and are usually terrified when one of their own dies. While the Mystics are wise and gentle, the Skeksis are driven and drawn to the trappings of power. Technically, the Skeksis are the embodiment of the traits that have the most potential to lead to evil, rather than being Made of Evil per se.One of them, skekGra the Heretic, even gave up on his evil ways as the Conqueror and is trying to atone for them. Age of Resistance shows that, while most Skeksis are evil, not all of them are purely evil, some being capable of love, remorse and their own moral standards.Still, they manage to make their society work through sheer courtesy and pragmatism. Being literally made from the darkness of the urSkeks never gave them much moral autonomy.Alien Blood: They bleed purplish-red blood, as evident by skekTek's transparent tubes in place of veins which show his blood circulation, and when Jen cuts skekSil's hand with the Crystal shard.Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Their last moments before the Crystal is restored are spent begging and screaming at Jen not to do it.Age Without Youth: A major plot point, as they capture Gelflings and Podlings to temporally reverse the aging process because they get uglier with age unlike the Mystics. With the help of their new Garthim soldiers, they managed to wipe out the Gelflings, leaving only two known survivors, Jen and Kira. When prophecies revealed that the tyranny of the Skeksis would end when the missing shard is found and the Crystal is restored by a Gelfling, the Skeksis went on a campaign of genocide. They turned on the Gelflings to obtain the purest of said life essence, which caused the Gelflings to rebel. until they found out the corruption they inflicted on the Crystal made it extract the life essence of nearby creatures, and used that essence to prolong their life. Both the Skeksis and the urRu/Mystics actually spawned from the urSkeks, when the Crystal was cracked during the last Great Conjunction.įor about a thousand years, the Skeksis ruled with the trust of the Gelflings and managed to hide their depravity and exploitation of the Crystal's powers from them. The Skeksis are reptilian humanoids with heads of birds of prey who took control of Thra and rule it as "lords of the Crystal".
